Dr. Robert Creech* -Professor of Christian Ministry and Director of Pastoral Ministries at the Truett Seminary at Baylor University.   Dr. Creech served as a founding board member for the Institute. He has been involved with seven other nonprofit organizations and brings over thirty years of pastoral experience to the Institute.  He is the former senior pastor at University Baptist Church, Clear Lake where he served for twenty years.  His international work has taken him to fourteen countries.

Dr. James Furr* - Associate Professor in Christianity, the John Bisagno Chair of Evangelism, and Director of the Antioch Institute at Houston Baptist University.  His research interests include change leadership, community transformation and Christian ethics.

Elliot Gershenson - President & CEO Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston  

Don West Graul* - practicing divorce mediator with forty years experience. Trained in Structured Divorce Mediation, he is also a member of Collaborative Family Lawyers of Houston.

Lord Raymond Hylton* - Parliamentarian, House of Lords. Chairman N. Ireland Association for Care and Resettlement of Offenders; Chairman, Center for Conflict Relief & Reconstruction; Vice Chairman Partners in Hope, re Children at Risk in Moscow. Promoted just legislation regarding the treatment of minorities, care for the handicapped and the prosecution of UK child abusers overseas.

Dr. Gale Stokes* - Gale Stokes is Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of History Emeritus at Rice University, where he specialized in the history of Eastern Europe, especially the Balkans and Serbia. Dr. Stokes is the author of a prize winning book on the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe, along with nine other books and many articles and shorter reviews.

Dr. Richard Stoll* - Professor, Rice University. A specialist in international conflict, Dr. Stoll has recently participated in a National Science Foundation (NSF) effort to collect data on militarized interstate disputes.  He is now engaged in an effort to predict the outbreak of serious international conflict using events data.

Dr. Vern Swisher – CEO Career Recovery Resources, Inc., Houston, Texas

William Talbott - retired clinical psychologist actively consulting in applied social/behavioral research. His areas of expertise include risk and threat assessment, crisis intervention, disaster/trauma interventions, and he has experience in curriculum development and professional training.

Mustafa Tameez* - Principal in a leading public affairs firm, recognized for grassroots political work and ethnic outreach efforts. Mr. Tameez promotes civic engagement and is on the board of directors for the Houston Zoo and South Asian Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Samuel Totten* - Co-Editor of Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, University of Arkansas, U.S. State Department's Atrocities Documentation Project - Darfur

Board of Directors

Mary Beth Arcidiacono - Mary Beth is a Fellow at the Child Trauma Academy where she provides training and consultation on grief / traumatic loss.  She has her Masters' Degree in Social Work, and has served as a volunteer in a number of organizations.  She is presently a volunteer with the Nobel Women's Initiative, Episcopal High School and Sylvan Rodriguez Elementary School, and she serves as a Council Member of The University of Texas at Austin's School of Social Work Advisory Council.

Chris Bilton - Chris is the Director of Leadership for the Center for Houston's Future where he develops and implements strategies for bringing regional business leaders together and engaging the public in civic activities aimed at improving the quality of life in the Greater Houston area.

Dr. Abdel Kader Fustok - Dr. Fustok is the Director of the Institute of Cosmetic Surgery and has a private practice specializing in plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.  He is a leader and activist in the Arab community in Houston.

Ronald Hulme - Ron is the CEO of Carlson Capital, L.P., a multi-strategy alternative asset firm.  In this role, he focuses on strategy, internal processes, and talent management, and leads Carlson's expanded energy practice. Prior to joining Carlson, Ron had a 26-year career with McKinsey & Company, an international consulting firm where he led several practice groups, including those in Strategy, Corporate Finance, Petroleum, Chemicals and Risk Management.

Rev. Dr. David McKechnie – Reverend McKechnie is the retired Senior Pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church of Houston, Texas, where he served for 25 years.  He is currently the Interim Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Houston and serves as President of the Texas Theological Foundation.

John Rhem - John is a corporate attorney in Houston, Texas providing legal counsel and services to businesses in and around Houston .  He is an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Houston and serves as the chairman of the Board of the Presbyterian School.

Joyce Salhoot- Joyce is a healthcare consultant with extensive experience in hospital administration.  She has published numerous articles on disability and reabilitation.  In addition, Joyce has served a variety of professional and philanthropic organizations both in Houston and in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

 

Executive Team

Randall Butler, Executive Director

Randall E. Butler is the founding director of the Institute.  He has been president of Butler Mediation Services since 1995. Formerly a partner in the law firms of Fulbright & Jaworski, L.L.P., and Cook, Butler & Doyle, L.L.P., Mr. Butler practiced for eighteen years as a trial lawyer. On January 1, 1999, Mr. Butler left his litigation practice to focus full time on conflict resolution and peacemaking. Mr. Butler has served as an instructor with the Attorney Mediator Institute and the Institute for Christian Conciliation and has taught a graduate level course in International Conflict Resolution.  Mr. Butler’s passion for resolving conflict has taken him to Croatia in August of each of the past five summers where he taught generative dialogues and conflict resolution skills at the ROM Leadership Development and Peace Gathering to large groups of future leaders from Serbia , Croatia , Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo , Albania , Macedonia and other neighboring countries. 

In addition to his experience at the ROM project in the Balkans, Butler has extensive experience designing and conducting creative processes for resolution of complex disputes involving large numbers of parties involving companies varying in size from the Fortune 500 to local private concerns.  He is a frequent speaker on the subjects of conflict resolution, peacemaking, and dialogue at conferences and seminars in Europe and the USA.

Liz Palmer, Chief Financial Officer / Chief Operating Officer

Liz Palmer received her master’s degree in accounting from the University of Texas, her law degree from the University of Houston, and her LLM from Georgetown University.  She has also completed the coursework required for a PhD in International Relations at Rice University.  Additionally, she brings over eight years of experience in accounting and financial analysis at both for profit and nonprofit organizations.
